Philippe Clement set for big test at Rangers with transfers needed at Ibrox

Chris Jack has insisted Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen will face a “big test” dealing with the centre-back position at Rangers in the transfer window this summer.

This came alongside a suggestion that Leon Balogun could sign a new deal at Ibrox if he is happy to take his chance competing for the second centre-back spot.

It was also stated that Clement may decide Connor Goldson provides enough experience to the defence so Balogun may not be needed, but either way, Rangers will have to invest in their defence.

Speaking on The Rangers Review [24 April], Jack shared: “If he’s happy to take his chance going for that second spot, then I can definitely see the reason [behind keeping him].

“If the manager feels he’s got enough experience in Connor Goldson for example, then he perhaps fills that experienced defender spot.

“It’s a big test to see how Clement and Nils Koppen remodel that centre-back area. We’re all in agreement that it’s an area of the side that needs an update and a bit of money spent on it.”

Rangers’ defenders have come in for plenty of criticism of late after some shocking performances, particularly in the 3-3 draw with Celtic and the 3-2 defeat to Ross County, with John Souttar and Goldson both slammed.

Since then, Rangers have kept clean sheets against both Dundee and Hearts, but there is no debate that the club is in need of an upgrade in that position, with the current options becoming stale and beyond their best.

Jack has previously claimed that Ben Davies and Leon King could leave the club this summer, placing even more importance on strengthening the position both in terms of the first-team picture and increasing the strength in depth at Ibrox.

With Koppen brought to the club to help change the transfer policy after several disastrous transfer windows, it will be interesting to keep an eye on what he and Clement can do to improve the squad this summer.
