Rangers told to sign ‘excellent’ Aberdeen ace Connor Barron as Celtic also linked

Connor Barron is a “no-brainer” signing Rangers should make in the summer with his Aberdeen contract up, says Andy Halliday.

The Motherwell man said on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (22 April) that the “excellent” Dons midfielder makes perfect sense for the Light Blues or their Old Firm rivals Celtic after he was the pick of either side in the 3-3 cup draw with the Hoops at the weekend.

But while Halliday has heard of interest from England he isn’t aware of any intent from Ibrox or Parkhead despite the 21-year-old’s ability, value and homegrown status.

He said, via Football Scotland: “Personally I thought Connor Barron was the best player on the pitch on Saturday, to be honest. And he’s out of contract in the summer.

“I’m not trying to prise him away from Aberdeen but I always feel they are the no-brainers that Celtic and Rangers should be looking for, especially when they’re trying to get homegrown talent for their European squads. I thought he was excellent.

“I’ve heard a few links down south as well but I just think they’re no-brainers for Rangers and Celtic. It doesn’t seem like there’s been much chat there.”

Rangers could capitalise on Pittodrie contract situation

Given the Dons have allowed such a highly-rated player come so close to his deal expiring it is a surprise that he isn’t apparently attracting more interest from either side of Glasgow, although his injury record has been highlighted as a possible Ibrox concern.

But since he would only cost a minimal fee to sign the youngster and Philippe Clement is facing an overhaul of his midfield the Gers could probably do worse than to bring him in all the same.

Ryan Jack made the switch from Pittodrie to Ibrox but looks set to leave Rangers when his own contract is up in the summer thanks to his extensive injury issues, while John Lundstram is now looking like he might be headed the same way despite the manager previously declaring his certainty of an extension being agreed.

Rangers Ryan Jack
Ryan Jack is one of four players who will be released by Rangers on 30 June.

With Jose Cifuentes long gone and Nico Raskin a shadow of the player who impressed last season of late a midfielder or two would probably be required in the summer.

Motherwell prodigy Lennon Miller has been tipped as the better option if it is a choice between the two domestic midfield talents with Rangers and Celtic both tipped as potential destinations for the teenager as well.

Another major overhaul is on the cards at Ibrox in the transfer window, and the Aberdeen talent is available despite the usual difficulties between the two clubs, although he might not be for long.

In other Rangers news, a “quality kid” at Ibrox is not expected to feature again this season.
