Rangers: Kris Boyd shares ‘scary’ Cryriel Dessers verdict amid criticism at Ibrox

Kris Boyd has insisted Cyriel Dessers represents the “death of the striker” as he is more focused on occupying opposition defenders than scoring goals for Rangers.

The Ibrox hero explained that strikers don’t play as they used to and, while Dessers’ 19-goal return is strong, the number of chances he misses always leads to questions over his performances.

It was also suggested that Dessers’ form in front of goal would be unlikely to change – which Boyd says is the reason the Nigerian is where he is.

Speaking to the Daily Record [23 April], Boyd shared: “When you dissect the death of the striker, it’s scary. It used to be that strikers were obsessed with goals.

“I don’t see that that fazes a lot of strikers now, they’re more focused on doing what Cyriel Dessers does – occupying centre-backs and being a nuisance.

“I don’t see that obsession for scoring goals the way strikers of the past were, but I don’t see that in world football anymore because the game’s changed.

“Nineteen goals is a decent return but what could it have been? Is that figure acceptable for an Old Firm striker? Yeah, it’s a difficult one because in a way you can say he’s scoring goals.

“But then every time you leave a match, every time you pick up a paper or tune into a radio station, all the talk is about the chances he’s missed. We’re all guilty of it.

“I don’t see anything changing. He might score a goal or two at the weekend but miss three or four chances. That wouldn’t surprise me. That’s what you’ve got. Without being disrespectful to him, that’s why he is where he is.”

Cyriel Dessers struggling for form at Rangers after Kris Boyd claim

Unfortunately, Boyd does appear to be right. No matter how many goals Dessers may go on to score this season, his performances have simply not been good enough and he remains a disappointing signing from last summer.

His claims echo those of Kenny Miller during the 0-0 draw with Dundee as the former Ibrox striker insisted that Philippe Clement and the supporters at Ibrox would not be happy with the way Dessers has played this season.

Since that draw, Dessers found the net twice in the Scottish Cup semi-final with Hearts, but that change of form sums up his season. Sometimes he looks confident and assured and then the next game he’ll be completely anonymous.

Ultimately, while his 19-goal tally is an impressive one on paper, it will be difficult to shake the feeling that he could have had many more and if he had scored those, who knows where Rangers would be in the title race?
