Ofcom responds to Chris Sutton complaints in Rangers draw v Celtic
Chris Sutton has not been penalised by Ofcom after complaints about a comment he made during the 3-3 draw between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox on 7 April, according to Football Scotland.
As per the report on 23 April, the comment was made following Celtic’s second goal, with Matt O’Riley converting a penalty by chipping the ball down the middle.
Sutton commented on the audacity of the midfielder’s technique – but the language he used resulted in several complaints. However, Ofcom has not seen fit to issue any punishment.
Sutton, speaking live on Sky Sports, said after the goal: “What a nerve from Matt O’Riley. Panenka. That is courageous.
“Celtic have not got a good record from penalties this season but you’ve got to have some balls to do that in this fixture.”
Rangers must be courageous to beat Celtic to more silverware this season
Despite their recent blip, Rangers have enjoyed a strong season and are still in with a chance of winning at least one more trophy this term – and possibly completing a domestic treble.
The Scottish League Cup was secured earlier in the campaign when Philippe Clement’s men beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the final on 17 December.
The Gers are also into the final of the Scottish FA Cup and sit three points behind their rivals in the Scottish Premiership standings.

If they are to turn one trophy into two or even three, their path is clear – Rangers must beat Celtic in each of their two remaining Old Firm derbies.
Brendan Rodgers’ side are Rangers’ opponents in the cup final on 25 May, while the Gers’ clearest route to closing the three-point gap between themselves and their rivals in the league is simply to take them at Parkhead.
It will not be easy, but Rangers must show the strength of their character if they want to be champions.
