Rangers: Gary McAllister makes brand new Ibrox title admission in fresh Celtic verdict
Rangers’ former assistant Gary McAllister has admitted the Gers’ success this season will be judged entirely on whether or not they win the Premiership.
Philippe Clement’s side have booked their place in the Scottish Cup final with a 2-0 win over Hearts at Hampden Park on Sunday (21 April) thanks to a brace from Cyriel Dessers, having already lifted the Viaplay Cup earlier in the season.
The Light Blues sit three points behind the Hoops with five league games left to play, but former Ibrox assistant McAllister believes winning a cup double this season won’t be enough to be considered a success.
Speaking to Sky Sports Scotland (22 April) he said: “I think the barometer is always the league, winning trophies is really difficult even for the big clubs so when you win a trophy it’s always a good thing.
“But I think the big clubs are always judged on league titles. There’s something about winning a league that’s just on another level. Deep down I think everybody behind the scenes, the manager, the players, the staff and the owners will all still be chasing winning the league.
“It just brings back memories of when Steven and I and the team came up from south of the border. We were quite a bit behind Celtic so we were given a bit of time, but winning that league was the key.
“We didn’t have any real success in the cups, but getting that title was the big thing.”
Will Rangers and Philippe Clement beat Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title this season?
When Clement arrived at Ibrox earlier in the season, most supporters had already come to terms with the fact that they weren’t even in a title race after their terrible start to the season under Michael Beale.
But a good run of form under the Belgian has seen the Light Blues move back into touching distance at the top of the table. While recent results have seen the pendulum swing back in the Hoops’ favour nothing is decided yet.
Most pundits are expecting Rangers to draw a blank at Parkhead and therefore hand Celtic the title, but if the Gers can somehow claim all three points, the Premiership will be back in their hands.
Hopefully, Clement will at least be able to lift the Scottish Cup at Hampden to add to his trophy cabinet in Glasgow. Two pieces of silverware in his first full season will be fairly impressive given the state the side was in when he arrived.
