Kris Boyd shares Rangers v St Mirren verdict as Celtic lead Scottish Premiership title race

Kris Boyd has stated that Rangers must apply pressure on Celtic with a win against St Mirren as the Scottish Premiership title race continues to heat up.

Philippe Clement’s side travel to The SMISA Stadium on Sunday 28 April following their comfortable 2-0 win over Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final, setting up an Old Firm derby in the final.

The Gers will face St Mirren before the Hoops kick off against Dundee and will be hoping to apply as much pressure as possible, with just three points separating the two sides at the top of the table.

Speaking to Sky Sports Scotland on Monday (22 April), Boyd said: “I think the most important thing for Rangers is that they go and win that game of football. They know they need to put Celtic under pressure, they need to bounce back in the league.

“It was an excellent result against Hearts in the Scottish Cup, finding a way to win that game. Going to St Mirren will be tough, as it was going to Dundee last week.

“These teams have worked hard to get top-six, and St Mirren and Dundee have a little battle going on for a European position now. It’s all to play for.

“It’s going to be a difficult match but Rangers will want to put Celtic under pressure ahead of their game at Dens Park. The most important thing is that Rangers just keep winning their games.”

Can Rangers pip Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title?

The Gers’ form in recent weeks has certainly dipped, and Clement will be keen for his side to rectify that with a convincing victory over St Mirren.

Rangers have beaten the Saints to nil in the previous four meetings, though this will be no easy fixture at The SMISA Stadium as Clement hopes to boost his side back to the top of the table.

It could be an incredible energy boost if the Gers are able to reclaim top spot over their Old Firm rivals with a big win before they take on Dundee at Dens Park, where Rangers fell short in a 0-0 draw recently.

Though Celtic managed to advance to the Scottish Cup final, bypassing Aberdeen on Saturday 20 April at Hampden Park, they did concede three goals as the match had to be decided by penalties.

Brendan Rodgers’ side certainly have weaknesses that can be exploited. However, Rangers will need to do something they have yet to do this season – beat them.
