Rangers: Stephen McGinn shares Philippe Clement sack verdict on air in ‘rebuild’ admission

Rangers manager Philippe Clement will still be the manager at Ibrox next season, despite the Light Blues’ poor run of form, according to Stephen McGinn.

The Light Blues are without a win in their last three Scottish Premiership games and now sit four points behind Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic as the title appears to have slipped from under their fingers.

While very few supporters are calling for the Belgian to be sacked, some have criticised his reaction to the Gers’ goalless draw with Dundee. Despite the increase in pressure, BBC Sport pundit McGinn has tipped Clement to lead a rebuild this summer.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (18 April, 33:40) he said: “Philippe Clement is going to the Rangers manager for next season. What needs to happen is, there needs to be a real rebuild in there.

“There is going to be a lot of players that leave. I think Ryan Jack will leave, I think Borna Barisic will leave, Jack Butland could be on his way, Sima will leave, Fabio Silva, Kemar Roofe will leave and that’s just the players out of contract or at the end of their loans.”

“I think Rangers are going to have to spend money.”

Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement as Celtic and Brendan Rodgers take charge of title race?

It would be ridiculous of supporters to turn on Clement so soon after he arrived at Ibrox after all the Belgian has managed to pull a side that was miles adrift of Celtic back into the title race in the space of a few months.

Results in the last few weeks have been nowhere near good enough and while some of that blame has to lie with the man in the dugout, these players have shown under several managers that they don’t have what it takes to win titles.

As some pundits have suggested, the current crop at Ibrox have managed to get two managers sacked in the space of a year with their poor performances. Sacking Clement so early would not do anything to solve the Gers’ problems.

Hopefully, the Rangers board will share a similar sense of McGinn and back the Belgian to rebuild the squad from the ground up this summer. Unless there is a big investment, it’s hard to see how Clement can turn this into a title-winning side.
