Chris Sutton reacts as Kris Boyd claims for Rangers penalty v Dundee – ‘Clutching at straws’
Chris Sutton insisted Kris Boyd was “clutching at straws” live on Sky Sports after the former Rangers man questioned whether Abdallah Sima could have been awarded a penalty v Dundee.
This came after Todd Cantwell provided Sima with an opportunity to give Rangers the lead at Dens Park as he was nudged as he took the shot, slightly putting the forward off balance.
Both pundits were aware it wasn’t a penalty despite their jokes, but Sutton went on to insist Sima should have done better with the opportunity despite the touch.
Speaking live on Sky Sports Football [20:58], Boyd detailed: “Sima does really well, gets it out of his feet and manages to get a shot away,” before he joked: “Penalty there, Chris? You were convinced.”
Sutton laughed before he replied: “You’re clutching at straws. He just does enough to put him off and doesn’t let him get a clean effort, but I think Sima will feel he should have scored.”
Chris Sutton and Kris Boyd react to Rangers penalty claim v Dundee
The whole “penalty to Rangers” joke is beginning to get fairly tired fairly quickly, but Clement’s side could have done with a fortunate referring decision as they failed to find the back of the net at Dens Park in a frustrating 0-0 draw.
It was an abject performance all around with no clear-cut chances being created bar one chance for the ever-inconsistent Cyriel Dessers who continued his disappointing form as he has since arriving at Ibrox last summer.
Following a 3-2 defeat to Ross County, Rangers now look all but out of the SPFL title race as they failed to make the most of their game in hand to close the gap to Celtic at the top as the Dens Park clash quickly became a must-win.

Going into the fixture, the Glasgow side knew they only had to win the rest of their games this season to take the title back to Ibrox, but following the 0-0 draw, they will now have to hope Brendan Rodgers’ side slips at some point before the end of the season.
