SPFL avoid Rangers ‘carnage’ with post-split fixture decision in Scottish Premiership

The post-split decision which will see Rangers travel to face St Mirren has been seen as controversial but Kenny Miller believes it is the fairest way around the situation.

The fixture split in the SPFL always brings up plenty of conversation as the league tries to level out home and away games for each side. The Gers knew they had to play Kilmarnock, St Mirren or Dundee away from home once again.

The decision has caused controversy among Rangers fans as they compare their fixtures to Celtic’s in terms of home and away games. This prompted a fan to call into Clyde 1 Super Scoreboard who shared a clip via X.

He asked: “Why are they getting an extra home game if it’s the opposite for Rangers? I don’t understand how you couldn’t have just played those fixtures out the way they would have normally played out if you didn’t have a split.”

This is because each side in the Premiership have to play an equal number of games home and away, this is the only way around this. Miller suggested that this was the only way to keep sporting integrity.

He said: “I think the phones would have blown up had Rangers had to go back to Dundee for a third time.

“It’s not perfect but you can’t have Rangers playing 20 home games and 18 away games because then if Rangers won the league, that’s just carnage. There has to be 19:19.”

Will the SPFL split affect Rangers in the title race?

On Tuesday (16 April), Rangers announced via their official website where and when they would be playing their post-split fixtures.

This will see them play three of the five games away from home with Kilmarnock and Dundee travelling to Ibrox in May.

The biggest game comes as the Light Blues travel to Parkhead to face Old Firm and title rivals Celtic in what will be a huge clash.

With Rangers being in a sticky patch of form the split may pose the perfect opportunity for a reset and a change in mindset for the run-in.

Philippe Clement’s side haven’t struggled when it comes to scoring goals but they can’t keep them out, even with the form of Jack Butland.

Three games away from home certainly isn’t what the Gers fans will want to have seen but rules are rules and they will have to roll with that.

These fixtures will either be what secure Rangers the title or will be the downfall of them, especially after the Celtic clash.

In other Rangers news, one Sky Sports pundit was left stunned by a fan calling for Jack Butland to be sold.
