Rangers: Philippe Clement speaks out after what’s happened to James Tavernier at Ibrox

Philippe Clement has spoken out about the criticism James Tavernier has been receiving from some of the Rangers fans.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday (16 April), the Gers boss said the captain is the “main man” when things are going well, but that you “get more stick” when the results aren’t quite what people would like them to be.

He added that it’s “part of the job” for the 32-year-old as he insisted that the right-back is aware of this as the Light Blues look to get back to winning ways against Dundee on Wednesday (17 April).

“When things go well, the captain is the ‘main man’, and when things go wrong – you get more stick, that is part of the job, and Tavernier is aware of this,” said Clement.

Is James Tavernier criticism warranted at Rangers?

This is a topic that massively divides the opinion amongst the Rangers fans as many believe Tavernier’s performances haven’t been great lately.

Despite that, the defender is continuing to make a huge contribution from an attacking standpoint after recording another excellent season in front of goal.

But the fact of the matter is, he is a right-back at the end of the day and perhaps more should be expected of him in his own half at times.

It’s no surprise to see the Englishman get a bit of stick because he often seems to receive the brunt of any negativity when the results take a negative turn.

He is a strong character, though, and he will back himself and the rest of the Light Blues players to turn things around as they look to get their title charge back on track.
