Rangers: BBC Sportsound baffled as Tom Lawrence goes unpunished for incident v Dundee

Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence left Craig Levein and Rory Loy stunned as he avoided a yellow card in the first half of the Gers clash with Dundee.

Philippe Clement’s side were unable to extend the gap to Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic at the top of the table as they spurned several excellent chances before drawing 0-0 at Dens Park on Wednesday (17 April).

The Gers struggled to get a foothold in the game in the first half and Lawrence showed some signs of frustration as he dragged down Luke McCowan late in the first half and BBC pundit Loy couldn’t believe he dodged a caution.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Wednesday (17 April, 20:37) he said: “I don’t know how on earth he’s got away with that Tom Lawrence. I think he just drags him back, it’s as cynical as you’ll see.”

Levein agreed saying: “Is that a booking? I don’t get that at all.”

Rangers and Philippe Clement hand Celtic advantage in Scottish Premiership title race after poor display v Dundee

Rangers were miles off of the pace in the first half of their clash at Dens Park as they were sloppy in their decision-making throughout the contest and unfortunately, Lawrence was no different to the rest of his teammates.

The Welshman has the ability to turn a game on its’ head with a single pass, but against Dundee, he struggled to have an impact from his deeper role alongside John Lundstram at the base of midfield.

He was by no means the worst player in a Gers shirt at Dens Park and on another day he could have come away with a goal or two, but he wasn’t able to produce a moment of magic to unlock the home side’s defence.

If Rangers want to beat Celtic to the title this season, they need their best players to do more in these sort of tight games. Too often under Clement and Michael Beale, the Gers have been passive in the biggest matches.
