Rangers: Ally McCoist tips Jack Butland for England call as ‘ridiculous’ claim emerges
Ally McCoist has tipped Rangers star Jack Butland to receive an England recall ahead of the European Championships after Jordan Pickford saw Everton concede six to Chelsea.
McCoist, speaking about Pickford’s performance as he was directly at fault for at least one goal, questioned the strength of the goalkeeping position for England amid mistakes and injuries.
Butland, meanwhile, was labelled “ridiculous” even in defeat against Ross County as McCoist insisted he must be ahead of the likes of Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone.
Speaking live on talkSPORT [16 April, 09:53], McCoist shared: “I’m not sure it’s the weakest part of England’s team, but it’s definitely a cause for concern if your number-one goalie is uncharacteristically making mistakes and he has made one or two errors.
“I think he’ll remain England’s number one, and so he should, but they’ll be a little bit concerned with his drop in form. Again, I’ll say it again, Jack Butland. His form has been absolutely fantastic, top class.
“Even in defeat, he made two or three saves which were ridiculous. All I’m saying is, the goalkeeping situation with England must be very good if he’s not getting a mention.
“Pope and Johnstone are injured, Ramsdale is clearly out of the frame, I can understand Southgate sitting by players who have not let him down, but the goalkeeping position is unique.”
Ally McCoist gushes over Jack Butland in Rangers and England verdict
McCoist has been vocal in his support and admiration for Butland this season, previously describing the goalkeeper as “out of this world” as he insisted he could be the difference between whether or not Rangers win the title.
Injuries to Newcastle’s Pope and Crystal Palace’s Johnstone could hand him the opportunity to go to the European Championships as Gareth Southgate’s third-choice shot-stopper, which will be a just reward for his performances.
This comes after it was previously suggested that the Rangers goalkeeper was unlucky to miss out on a call-up for the most recent international break, with Ramsdale and Johnstone the two selected alongside Pickford and ahead of Butland.

Given the performances and injury concerns surrounding his competitors, Butland must be in with a strong shout to travel to Germany with the team, particularly if Pickford continues his questionable performances.
