Rangers: Ally McCoist stunned by ‘excellent’ Jack Butland despite defeat v Ross County

Ally McCoist was stunned by the performance of Jack Butland as he insisted the 3-2 defeat to Ross County wouldn’t even have been close if not for the goalkeeper.

The Ibrox legend confessed it would take him at least 72 hours to get over the defeat, although he confessed County were “tremendous” in their victory while Philippe Clement’s side were not.

He went on to claim the hosts were simply hungrier and wanted the win more than Rangers and you could see what the result would be immediately after kick-off.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [relayed by the Daily Record, 16 April], McCoist shared: “It will take at least, I would imagine, another 72 hours before I am over that, but fair play to Ross County who incidentally were tremendous and we weren’t.

“Thoroughly deserved. They went about it and it was one of these games you watch and can see it coming from the word go. They were hungrier, effectively wanted it more and if it wasn’t for Jack Butland again it wouldn’t have been as close. He had another excellent game.”

Ally McCoist stunned by Rangers star Jack Butland v Ross County

McCoist has been vocal in his support and admiration for Butland this season, previously describing the goalkeeper as “out of this world” as he insisted he could be the difference between whether or not Rangers win the title.

Butland’s displays at Ibrox have been so impressive that he has been heavily linked with a recall to the England international set-up despite narrowly missing out on the last squad, with a tough decision having to be made.

An injury to Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone could hand him the opportunity to go to the European Championships as Gareth Southgate’s third-choice shot-stopper, which will be a just reward for his performances.

The defeat to Ross County came as a severe blow to Rangers’ title hopes as they missed the opportunity to close the gap to Celtic who played the day before the defeat, making their game in hand against Dundee a must-win occasion.
