SPFL blasted after what it’s done in Rangers and Dundee fixture debacle
Peter Martin has blasted the SPFL for not immediately taking control of the Dundee and Rangers fixture saga following the latest postponement.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer on Friday (12 April), the host said the governing body should have taken the game out of The Dee’s hands and decided that it was going to be played away from Dens Park.
Responding to those claims, Alan Rough admitted that there is no one at the top making the “major decisions” when they come along, adding that someone with authority needs to tell everyone what’s happening because the clubs are only going to “look after themselves”.
“First and foremost, the immediate thing that I think should have happened is the SPFL should have taken it out of Dundee’s hands and decided that this game was going to be played elsewhere because they needed clarity on the fixtures before the split,” said Martin.
“It’s a typical example of what’s been happening when there are any major decisions that have to be made,” said Rough. “We don’t have anybody at the top of the tree making those decisions, telling the teams ‘this is what’s happening, this is what we’re doing’.
“If you leave it to the teams, quite lately they all look after themselves. Obviously, Rangers want it where they want it and Dundee want it where they want to play because they’ve got games coming up that could affect both of them. It needs somebody of some authority to say ‘this is what’s happening’.”

The way this situation has unfolded over the past few days has been absolutely ridiculous and it could have quite easily been avoided.
It was clear to many people at the start of the week that the game might not be able to be played at Dens Park because of the state of the pitch and the poor weather forecast.
But it took until late on Wednesday (10 April) before a decision was eventually made to postpone the match for a second time in a matter of weeks.
There has been so much debate since then about where – and when – the game is going to be played, but it would now just make sense to play it in a neutral venue to ensure it can go ahead before the split.
This whole situation has been a bit of an embarrassment for Scottish football as these instances really shouldn’t be happening at this level when so much is on the line.
