Rangers: Rule change called for amid ’embarrassing’ Dundee saga

Michael Gannon has called for a Scottish Premiership rule change amid the “embarrassing” saga surrounding Rangers’ match against Dundee at Dens Park.

The Gers’ league clash with the Dee was postponed for a second time this season, with a waterlogged pitch the reason for the decision, much to the annoyance of fans, media and club officials.

As Rangers’ game in hand over Old Firm rivals Celtic, Philippe Clement will be keen to claim three points and head back to the top of the Scottish Premiership, though the clash continues to be delayed.

Reacting to the drama, Gannon spoke to the Daily Record on Saturday (13 April, page 50), saying: “If Dens is still a mess, they’ll need to play it elsewhere.

“We can’t do much about the weather in this country but we need stricter rules on the state of surfaces – this has been embarrassing for the Scottish game.”

Rangers suffer Scottish Premiership setback amid Dundee saga

Celtic will feel that the momentum has shifted back in their direction as Rangers continue to struggle with their clash at Dens Park.

While several different solutions have been suggested, with Clement even mooting a behind-closed-doors game, no final decision has been made yet and Rangers remain one game behind their rivals.

The Gers could be heading into the final few weeks of the league campaign two points above the Hoops, having been expected to defeat Dundee comfortably.

Though it is understandable that some disgruntled fans want the SPFL to take action against Dundee for the state of their pitch, the massive gulf in size of clubs in the division, as well as revenue, will certainly play an important role.

Dundee are unlikely to be able to invest as much in their facilities as some of the other clubs in the Scottish Premiership, making it much harder to keep their pitch up to usual standards, especially with Scotland’s horrific weather.

Whatever the solution, one must be found soon before the saga drags on any longer and affects Rangers’ season further.
