Rangers: Pundit caught in heated on-air debate with Gers fan over Dundee saga

Gordon Dalziel has been caught in a heated on-air debate after a Rangers fan suggested the rearranged Dundee game should be played at Ibrox.

Responding to those claims on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Thursday (11 April), the pundit said that outcome would be “unfair” to Celtic because it would give the Gers home advantage after the fixture has been postponed twice at Dens Park in recent weeks.

Although he admits the Light Blues supporter – called Billy – has a right to be angry with Dundee, Dalziel claimed the fan would be calling up the show shouting about it being unfair on the Ibrox club if the roles were reversed and a Hoops game was rearranged to be played at Celtic Park.

“It’s quite simple, Dundee have lost the right to where the game should be played,” said Billy. “You could play it at Ibrox behind closed doors, all the Rangers fans who paid for their tickets away, open one stand, put them in there and charge Dundee for the use of Ibrox. Why should Rangers and Rangers fans get the bulk of it?”

“Why should Rangers have home advantage?” asked Dalziel.

“How should they not?” replied Billy.

“Because it’s unfair to Celtic,” added Dalziel. “Listen, reverse it. If this is a case of Celtic, you would be on here shouting ‘why is the game put to Celtic Park, giving Celtic an advantage in a close title race’. I think you’re angry with Dundee and I totally agree with you, I’m with you 100 per cent.

“But you can’t flip that, turn around and say ‘okay, tell them they’ve got to play at Ibrox’. That would give Rangers the home advantage in a game against Dundee in one of the closest title races we’ve had for a long time, that can’t happen.”

Could the Rangers and Dundee fixture be played at Ibrox?

It wouldn’t really be fair for the rearranged fixture to be played at Ibrox as that would undermine the nature of the competition given that Rangers would gain the home advantage.

It remains to be seen whether or not Dundee will be able to host the game at the third attempt on 17 April, with talks ongoing about moving it to a neutral venue.

That would be the most logical decision as it’s pretty clear that the Dens Park pitch can’t be relied upon and this match has to take place next week.

The whole situation has made a bit of a mockery of Scottish football as a fixture shouldn’t be called off twice within a matter of weeks at this level.

The Gers would no doubt just like to get the fixture out of the way now as it’s currently preventing them from regaining top spot in their battle for the title.
