Jim White reveals new Rangers and Dundee twist as ‘plot thickens’ after what he’s heard

Jim White has revealed that Rangers had never planned to travel to play Dundee last midweek after the Tayside club told the SPFL the pitch was unplayable on 2 and 3 April.

Questions have been raised as to why the rearranged fixture was not pencilled in for 3 April ahead of the Old Firm clash on 7 April, but White’s update brings further clarity as the pitch remained unplayable.

There had been suggestions that it was Rangers who didn’t want to play the fixture on that date due to the proximity to the Old Firm, but it now appears Dundee made the final call with the SPFL.

The talkSPORT journalist shared the update via his X account amid plenty of controversy surrounding the game which was postponed for a second time on 10 April.

“Getting confirmation that Rangers travelling to play Dundee last midweek was never an option,” White wrote, “Tayside club reportedly told the SPFL on April 2 and 3 their pitch was unplayable! Plot thickens!”

Despite the suggestions that it was the Ibrox side delaying the fixture, and criticism from the likes of Simon Jordan for that perceived call, the state of the pitch at Dens Park should remain the point of contention here.

The repeatedly postponed fixture could even have a direct impact on the title race as it will allow Celtic to maintain their gap at the top which could be expanded to four points on Saturday before Gers play next.

That could prove a psychological disadvantage for Clement’s team – although they have shown no concern when chasing previously. A win against Dundee, whenever the game takes place, is the most likely outcome regardless of the opponents’ situation.

Philippe Clement was fuming with the second decision and the excuses provided by Dundee as he insisted the club would play on Mars if that’s where the game had to be arranged – which was a clear hint that Gers had not turned down the opportunity last midweek.
