Rangers v Dundee: BBC journalist Tom English shares why Dens Park clash faces more issues

Tom English has suggested the twice-rearranged Rangers trip to Dundee could yet again face weather disruption in its new slot next week.

The BBC Sport journalist reacted via Twitter on 10 April after the Dens Park clash was rained off for the second time to show that there is the chance of more rain forecast for next Wednesday (17 April) when it is supposed to now be played.

Rangers have already reacted furiously at the “negligence” and “unprofessionalism” by Dundee in a statement on their official website, while there has been strong criticism from elsewhere after Don Robertson was forced to call the game off following more heavy rain.

And with the game now planned for next week after the final round of pre-split fixtures English has implied there could be more problems lying ahead still.

English wrote along with a screenshot of the Met Office’s projection for the game: “Rearranged for next Wednesday. What could possibly go wrong?”

Rangers disruption could continue in Scottish Premiership

Dundee and the SPFL had the warning that this game could face problems and it failed to go ahead anyway, despite the apparent contingency plans to hold it elsewhere.

If Philippe Clement and the Light Blues come around to a third attempt to play at Dens Park and the same issues arise it will turn what is already a fairly farcical situation into a huge issue.

It goes without saying that if an away game against Dundee can’t be played at Dens Park that is far from ideal, but it going ahead at another venue is better than it not happening at all.

That this comes so close to the split, not least when there is only a single point gap to Celtic at the top of the table, has increased the pressure on the situation hugely.

The forecast for next week isn’t quite as bad as it was for the second attempt but considering Robertson was happy for the game to go ahead after his 11.30am pitch inspection only for that to prove impossible four hours later it shows how quickly the situation can change.

The Gers have already been disrupted significantly so if they can get the game played at Dundee next week that is only going to be the least worst option now.

But the authorities are going to have to come up with a viable alternative ahead of time so everyone isn’t left in the same situation as they were here, waiting around looking at the skies on the day and eventually holding their hands up in defeat.
