Rangers: Michael Stewart hit with X Community Note after what he said about Old Firm

Michael Stewart has been given a Community Note on X after his comments about VAR Nick Walsh in the 3-3 draw between Rangers and Celtic on Sunday.

There was plenty of controversy in the latest instalment of the Old Firm derby at Ibrox with Walsh calling referrer John Beaton to the pitchside monitor three times throughout the Scottish Premiership clash.

This saw many fans and pundits take to social media to share their opinion on the various moments throughout the game, Stewart was one of those.

After the game on 7 April, the ex-Hearts and Hibs midfielder took to his personal X account to brandish the referee and his team as “embarrassing” and “disgraceful”.

Despite being reminded of the official rules by the Behind the Whistles Podcast earlier in the day, Stewart went back to X to complain further.

He said: “I do wonder if Nick Walsh didn’t see the initial touch of the ball, hence why he never showed it. He wouldn’t be alone. After the game, I had to show the touch to someone who was completely unaware of it.”

These comments were related to the Gers’ penalty with Celtic left frustrated by the Scottish FA after reviewing footage.

Hilariously, Stewart’s tweet now shows up with a Community Note attached to it to inform readers why he is wrong.

This said: “The touch doesn’t matter as stated in the rules.”

What was the controversy in Celtic v Rangers?

The nature of VAR is always going to result in disagreements as the decisions made are going to be subjective to opinion.

The first talking point came as Connor Goldson had a penalty given against him for handball as it dropped and met his elbow off a Celtic corner.

Next was Fabio Silva as he was adjudged to have dived before VAR decided he went down under subsequent contact from Alastair Johnston and a penalty was given.

Finally, Cyriel Dessers had his potential equaliser ruled out for a Tom Lawrence foul on Tomoki Iwata which cut short some spectacular scenes in the stands.

Each of these decisions lead to conversation on social media with Stewart being one of the most vocal against the officials.

Despite there being plenty of discussion around the decisions made by the officials, most people would agree they that are correct.

It is safe to say that Stewart has been proved wrong on social media in the days following the derby, this is just the latest addition to this story…
