Rangers: Philippe Clement could call upon Robbie Fraser as Ridvan Yilmaz injury update emerges
Philippe Clement’s biggest worry heading into Rangers’ clash against Dundee FC will be his vacant left-back position – and Robbie Fraser could help solve that issue.
The 21-year-old has been on the fringe of the Gers’ senior team this season, taking up a spot on the bench on four occasions in the Europa League but unable to get onto the pitch.
Clement clearly has a plan for the young defender, who has been captaining Rangers B team this season, most recently doing so for their clash with Motherwell on Tuesday 9 April.
Although the youth star will be flat on his feet after a tough 3-0 defeat to the Steelmen, he would undoubtedly never turn an opportunity to claim his senior debut.
The full-back situation in the first team may have just handed Fraser the perfect opportunity to make that dream come true.
Ridvan Yilmaz ruled out of Rangers v Dundee FC
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday (9 April), Clement said: “Ridvan is still missing, not long-term but not fit for this game.”
While Borna Barisic might feel like the obvious replacement for the Turkish full-back, the transfer rumours linking him with an Ibrox exit this summer could suggest that his head is not in the right place.
The Croatian has been nothing but professional in his six years at the club, but having fallen down the pecking order under Clement, the defender is not the ideal pick against Dundee.
This would suggest that B team captain Fraser could be handed his senior debut as Rangers look to reclaim the Scottish Premiership top spot, knocking Celtic off their perch.
Although Dundee have not been the Gers since 2017, all pressure will be on Clement’s men to perform, as taking victory in their game in hand over Old Firm rivals could make the difference between who lifts the league title.
It would be risky to throw Fraser into the title-winning deep end, but it could be a decision that helps put Rangers back at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
