Rangers: Expert reacts to player exit news with Philippe Clement not happy

Dan Plumley has insisted that clubs such as Rangers do not want to get into the habit of letting too many contracts run out in their playing squad at once.

The Belgian is said to be unhappy at the prospect of losing six first-team players this summer for no cost, as their contracts approach an end at Ibrox.

The finance expert admitted that clubs are moving earlier nowadays to get ahead of the curve, with the likes of John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe, Leon Balogun, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack and Jon McLaughlin all set for the exit, as things stand.

“You would always like to be ahead of the curve,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“We’ve seen clubs move much quicker with these kinds of things in the last few years than perhaps ever before, for the reasons we’re talking about here, you don’t want to be getting to this stage of the season with lots of players running out of contracts and having to deal with those negotiations.

I guess it’s not a model that you would want to be running year-on-year, and I don’t think Rangers have been in that space, this might be one example where it’s just tipped over slightly.

It’s certainly something that clubs will be mindful of, and again, you’ve got all other manner of things to throw into the mix of when were they signed? Who signed those players?

Managerial changes happen frequently, so it is easy to lose sight on some of those things, but the manager will want to know what those contractual situations are and get those resolved as quickly as possible.

You don’t want to be going into an off-season with potentially 10 players out of contract and a lot of those players will have a decision on where to go. It’s not ideal, and you certainly don’t want to be making a habit out of it.”

Rangers exit clearout at Ibrox

Of the players who are running out of contract in Govan, Lundstram is the one who is locked in talks, but even his latest offer is not said to have impressed.

Clement and Nils Koppen are trying to instil a new strategy at Ibrox of buying players and then moving them on for serious profit when the time comes.

For that to happen, it looks as though a summer clearout is on the cards first.
