Rangers: Connor Goldson ‘problem’ emerges at Ibrox after Philippe Clement decision

Stevie Clifford, host of the Four Lads Had A Dream podcast, has insisted Connor Goldson’s dip in form will be a “real problem” for Rangers after his performance against Celtic.

The centre-back was dragged off by Philippe Clement with minutes to go in the 3-3 draw in a clear sign that the boss did not trust Goldson to see out the game, favouring Leon Balogun.

Not only was Goldson at fault for Celtic’s second goal after giving away a needless penalty, it could also be argued he should have done a better job dealing with the third goal and could have positioned himself better for the first.

Speaking to The Rangers Review [9 April], Clifford shared: “We’ve got a real problem at centre-back. If we want to really talk seriously, Connor Goldson’s performance on Sunday was poor.

“I think it’s telling that with three or four minutes left, they brought him off. If they’ve taken him off because they can’t trust him because he’s playing so poorly, then we’ve got a real issue.

“Connor Goldson’s been spooked for weeks now, normally he has a wobble or two and then he comes back, but he’s not done that this time. Everything was overhit, everything was indecisive. He should’ve equalised as well with the header.”

Connor Goldson slammed after Rangers v Celtic performance

Widescale changes have been mooted for Clement’s defence over the summer, with John Souttar having previously been criticised by Clifford for his performances as the podcast host claimed he has had a disappointing season.

Chris Jack, meanwhile, named Balogun alongside Ben Davies and Borna Barisic as potential departures from Ibrox when the transfer window opens, as another overhaul is expected to take place following last summer’s disaster window.

Goldson has often been looked at as part of the immovable spine of the Rangers team alongside the likes of James Tavernier, John Lundstram and Abdallah Sima who, when fit, are almost undroppable. Now, though, that may have changed.

With a crucial game coming up next against Dundee at Dens Park, Goldson’s position in the team could come into question and Balogun may be chosen to start the game given the decision mate against Celtic last time out.
