Rangers: Celtic complain to SFA after Old Firm controversy at Ibrox

Celtic have asked the Scottish FA to explain the VAR process which led to Fabio Silva being awarded a penalty for Rangers in the 3-3 Old Firm draw at Ibrox, according to The National.

The news outlet reported on 8 April that the club believe referee John Beaton was not shown a critical angle of the incident which saw Silva felled by Alistair Johnston in the box.

This echoes the decision from Rangers after the previous Old Firm clash at Parkhead in which VAR did not give a penalty for handball despite replays showing the ball struck the defender’s hand.

Celtic write to SFA after Rangers incident at Ibrox

The claim from Celtic comes across as somewhat bizarre given replays of the incident showed Silva had been kicked in his knee by Johnston after chopping past him in the box in what, in any other game, would have been a blatant spot-kick.

Chris Sutton was left fuming live on Sky Sports after Silva was felled in the box leading to a penalty to Rangers, which was dispatched expertly by James Tavernier, despite Sutton’s best efforts to pretend the forward hadn’t been kicked in the knee.

Sutton’s ravings prompted Graeme Souness to label him “biased” as the Gers legend insisted it was a blatant penalty and was not even worth debating – although the other side of Glasgow clearly views things differently.

The saga after the previous Old Firm at Parkhead eventually saw Rangers request Willie Collum not referee another game for the club, seeing them mocked by Celtic supporters. We’ll see now what action they take.

In other Rangers news, Gabby Agbonlahor was shocked by Tavernier’s performance.
