Rangers v Celtic: BBC pundit slams James Tavernier in Old Firm derby

Stuart McCall has slammed James Tavernier for the concession of the first goal in the Rangers v Celtic clash at Ibrox on 7 April.

Daizen Maeda opened the scoring for the visitors in the first minute of the contest and Tavernier was slow to get to him and ended up allowing him to score.

He did go on and score a penalty at the other end with the game ending 3-3, but his defensive contribution was rightly criticised.

McCall told BBC Sportsound at 12:05: “It’s a complete freak. Tavernier should have reacted earlier, but he never. A fantastic start for Celtic.”

Tavernier must do better for Rangers

Tavernier’s attacking prowess and set-piece abilities are undeniable assets for his team, often contributing crucial goals and assists that can decide matches.

However, in high-stakes games like the Old Firm derby, defensive solidity is equally essential for title aspirations.

While Tavernier’s offensive contributions are invaluable, defensive lapses can prove costly, as seen with Maeda’s early goal.

Maintaining a balance between attacking flair and defensive discipline is crucial for any top-level full-back.

Tavernier’s ability to tighten up defensively would not only enhance Rangers’ defensive stability but also provide a more well-rounded contribution to the team’s overall success.

Recognising and addressing defensive vulnerabilities will be vital for Tavernier to fulfil his potential as a complete full-back and to help Gers maintain their title challenge.
