Rangers: Graeme Souness hits out at Chris Sutton live on talkSPORT after ’embarrassing’ Celtic rant

Graeme Souness has hit out at Chris Sutton for his “biased” commentary during Rangers’ 3-3 Old Firm draw with Celtic at Ibrox, particularly in terms of the Fabio Silva penalty.

The Rangers legend was stunned by Sutton’s reaction to the penalty as he repeatedly insisted Silva had dived despite replays showing he was clearly kicked on the knee.

Souness was also critical of Silva, who he claimed was “embarrassing himself” with his “theatrics”, but on that occasion, the correct call was made and it was a penalty.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [8 April, 10:54], Souness explained: “100 per cent [it’s a penalty]. Silva is a diver and he’s embarrassing himself, but that was a penalty. The defender cut him across the knees with his dangling foot. It’s a penalty.

“I’m reluctant to go strong on Chris Sutton, he’s funny, he did a bit [of charity work] for me, but I can’t believe how biased he is when he’s talking about Rangers. He was saying ‘It’s embarrassing, it’s not a penalty’.

“It was easily a penalty, there’s not even a discussion to have for me. People are now aware of his [Silva’s] theatrics, but that was definitely, for me, 100 per cent a penalty.”

Chris Sutton slammed for Celtic bias during Rangers clash

The Celtic hero has been criticised several times for his evident bias against Rangers, but his words in the 3-3 draw at Ibrox were almost at another level and have led to widespread condemnation even now from the likes of Souness.

Sutton was left fuming live on Sky Sports after Silva was felled in the box leading to a penalty to Rangers, which was dispatched expertly by James Tavernier, despite Sutton’s best efforts to pretend the forward hadn’t been kicked in the knee.

Ultimately, the penalty was awarded and Tavernier tucked it away which put the first step in place for Philippe Clement’s side to complete a fantastic comeback and Celtic threw away a golden opportunity to take all three points.

Alan Brazil insisted that the title race is far from over after the game, with Clement’s side still to make the trip to Parkhead, meaning if Celtic win the rest of their games they will win the league despite Rangers’ current points advantage.
