Rangers: Gabby Agbonlahor ‘shocked’ by ‘terrible’ James Tavernier in new rant live on talkSPORT

Gabby Agbonlahor was stunned by Rangers’ performance against Celtic as he singled out James Tavernier for a “terrible” display at Ibrox.

Agbonlahor explained that the atmosphere created by the supporters had set the game up perfectly, but the performance meant Celtic should have been three or four goals up by half-time.

Alongside Tavernier, the former Aston Villa striker named Connor Goldson, Scott Wright, Tom Lawrence and Cyriel Dessers, insisting nobody in the Gers team could play in the top half of the English Championship.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [8 April, 06:49], Agbonlahor shared: “The standard of Rangers’ football in the first half, I was shocked. Rangers fans created an outstanding atmosphere, it’s a derby game, the perfect game to go and play your best football.

“Tavernier was terrible, he’s usually one of the better players for Rangers. Goldson, Wright, Lawrence, Dessers. Honestly watching the game, I’m thinking none of this Rangers team would get into a top-half Championship side. That’s how bad they were.

“Second half they made changes and were better but Celtic should’ve been four or five up in the first half. They were quite wasteful but they were so on top.”

The overall performance was a huge disappointment at Ibrox despite the ultimately positive result thanks to a 93rd-minute Rabbi Matondo equaliser, but after going two goals down, criticism has to be levelled at the players.

Philippe Clement can take the blame to a certain extent, but the number of players who simply didn’t show up on the day including the likes of Tavernier, Goldson and Dessers whom the team was relying on will not have been a pleasant sight.

The game was also not without its controversies, with Chris Sutton left fuming live on Sky Sports after Fabio Silva was felled in the box leading to a penalty to Rangers, despite his best efforts to pretend the forward hadn’t been kicked in the knee.

Agbonlahor’s assessment about players not even being at Championship level is perhaps a touch dramatic, but it was a stark reminder to the supporters at Ibrox that these players are far from invincible, with the title race raging on.
