Rangers v Celtic: Pat Bonner savages James Tavernier after what he did
Pat Bonner has savaged James Tavernier for the concession of the first goal in the Rangers v Celtic clash at Ibrox on 7 April.
The game ended 3-3 with Gers coming from behind on all occasions and even down 2-0 at half-time before Philippe Clement masterminded the comeback.
However, Tavernier, despite scoring a penalty, made the headlines for the wrong reasons with Daizen Maeda scoring in the first minute.
Bonner told BBC Sportsound at 12:05: “Quite incredible. Tavernier went to sleep a little bit, he didn’t realise that Maeda – who is really quick – was getting in to close him down.
“He played it off him and the goalkeeper was out of position. It’s hesitation from Tavernier, and he should have been onto it quicker. He has to do better.”
Tavernier puts Rangers into trouble at the start of the game
Striking a harmonious balance between offensive flair and defensive duties emerges as imperative for Tavernier to cement his significance in Gers’ title aspirations.
The Englishman’s remarkable attacking prowess and proficiency in set-piece situations undoubtedly bolster his side’s offensive threat, often proving instrumental in securing vital goals and assists pivotal to match outcomes.
Despite Tavernier’s invaluable offensive contributions, defensive vulnerabilities, exemplified by Maeda’s early goal, underscore the necessity for a more balanced approach.
Enhancing defensive discipline not only fortifies Rangers’ backline but also augments Tavernier’s overall impact on the team’s performance.

It’s not the first time that his defensive contributions have come into question and his offensive displays should overshadow his lack of efforts at the other end.
