Rangers v Celtic: Neil Lennon drops ‘Enormous’ verdict ahead of Old Firm clash
Neil Lennon has expressed just how “enormous” the clash between Rangers and Celtic is on Sunday (7 April), as Philippe Clement experiences his first Old Firm clash at Ibrox.
The Old Firms rivals are separated by just one point at the top of the Scottish Premiership, while the Gers have a game in hand after their match against Dundee FC was postponed weeks ago.
With the full backing of the Ibrox crowd, Clement will be hoping his side can claim all three points against their rivals, making amends for the 2-1 defeat at Celtic Park in December.
Speaking live via Sky Sports on Sunday (7 April, 11:04am), Lennon said: “It’s enormous. These matches are always pivotal in the title run-in.
“For me, today’s game is all about Celtic cannot get beat. If Rangers do win the game, they’ll be two points clear with a game in hand. That puts them in a really strong position.
“From Brendan’s point of view, Celtic have won the big games so far in this contest. Two from two, coming here to make it three. Looking at the teams and conditions today, it’s really hard to predict how it’s going to go.”
Can Rangers pip Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title?
The Ibrox crowd will have a huge role to play as the Gers prepare to face Celtic for the third time this season. A victory on Sunday and the title race will truly be in Rangers’ hands.
Clement will be desperate to right the wrongs that Rangers experienced at Celtic Park in December, a match that was clouded with controversy and conspiracy, ending in a 2-1 win for the Hoops.
Recent history would suggest that Celtic are favourites, but statistics only tell one side of the story, and Rangers will be keen to fight against that and continue their brilliant form.
The Gers have only lost three matches since the appointment of Clement in October, having lost to Celtic, Motherwell and Benfica, already lifting one piece of silverware in the League Cup.
His players will need to step up like they have done so many times this season, with the likes of Jack Butland, James Tavernier, John Lundstram and Cyriel Dessers expected to lead by example in such a crucial match.
