Rangers vs Celtic: Joey Barton shares reaction to Ibrox thriller, sends message to John Beaton

Joey Barton has shared his verdict following the dramatic 3-3 Old Firm derby clash between Rangers and Celtic on Sunday (7 April).

The Gers recovered from two goals down and eventually snatched a late 3-3 draw in a game that had talking points aplenty.

Referee John Beaton was involved in a number of those contentious moments, but Barton felt he did a good job officiating the contest.

“What a fantastic game of football. Game of two halves,” former Rangers player Barton posted on his personal X account [7 April].”Philippe Clement got his changes absolutely on the money. Sign of a really good coach.

“Rangers much improved in the 2nd period. I knew Cantwell and McGregor were having a bit. Good to see. Phenomenal atmosphere at Ibrox. Some strike from Tav for the pen and Matondo to equalise.

“Rangers should go and win fa’here. VAR? Soft but in modern game, I think it’s a pen. Correct decision Rangers disallowed goal for the foul on Celtic’s Japanese midfielder in the build up to 2nd goal. Referee superb.

“Comms and co-comms superb. Good analysis from Lennon and co in studio. Well done to all involved. Proper game for a neutral to watch. Just my opinion as a neutral football man.”

Rangers v Celtic highlights

For those who were unable to watch the drama play out live, Sky Sports have made the highlights free to view.

They make for better viewing with the benefit of hindsight, knowing that Rabbi Matondo’s late strike earned the Gers a point.

A draw looked extremely unlikely after a pretty dire first-half display at Ibrox – easily the worst 45-minute showing of Philippe Clement’s tenure.

To then go 3-2 behind after working so hard to draw level was a further setback, as was having a goal chalked off, but the Gers dug deep.

Some will be disappointed with the outcome, but ultimately it ensures the Gers’ title hopes are still in their own hands.

With a trip to Celtic Park still to come, supporters can only strap themselves in and await the next twist in this brilliant title race.

In other Rangers news, Pat Bonner was “in shock” at something he saw in the game at Ibrox.
