Rangers: Daniel Lafferty says ‘ridiculous’ John Lundstram can ‘get the better’ of Reo Hatate

Daniel Lafferty has labelled Rangers midfielder John Lundstram “ridiculous” and says he can get the better of Reo Hatate against Celtic on April 7.

The Gers are second in the Scottish Premiership table, one point behind rivals Celtic but with a game in hand ahead of the Ibrox showdown.

Lundstram is set to be part of Philippe Clement’s starting line-up and will likely come up against Hatate, but former Celtic defender Lafferty – who played with Lundstram at Sheffield United – believes the Englishman can come out on top in that contest.

He said to the Scottish Sun: “Technically, John is ridiculous. Left foot, right foot, he’s so comfortable. He’s also deceptively quick when he covers the ground.

“Lunny’s been brilliant for Rangers the last couple of years and delivered in some huge games, including big European games. He’s got real personality as a footballer, that steeliness about him.

“He’s communicating all the time, even though it can sometimes be difficult understanding that accent.

“Lunny’s a match for any central midfielder. He’s played in the Premier League, so that tells you everything. Reo Hatate is certainly an exceptional midfielder for Celtic – but John’s capable of getting the better of him.”

John Lundstram the lynchpin for Rangers

Lundstram has established himself as a crucial member of Clement’s squad, playing the fourth-most minutes of any Rangers player across all competitions this term.

The 30-year-old’s presence in midfield provides calmness, steel and a springboard from which to launch attacks.

He will be key to nullifying the threat of Celtic’s own central players and helping Rangers control the game at Ibrox.

Should he produce another strong showing in the Old Firm derby, it will add greater urgency to the ongoing negotiations over his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Rangers and Clement are keen to keep hold of their midfield star, but they must fend off interest from Turkish side Trabzonspor, who are hoping to lure Lundstram away.
