Rangers: Dave King slams Graeme Souness for what he did when Philippe Clement was hired
Former Rangers chairman Dave King has criticised club legend Graeme Souness for telling the media that Frank Lampard was his preferred choice of manager to replace Michael Beale.
Philippe Clement ultimately took the post instead of the former Chelsea midfielder and has led the Gers superbly, winning the Scottish League Cup and mounting a strong charge for the Scottish Premiership title.
King feels Souness should have kept his opinion to himself to help foster positivity about whichever manager was hired, telling Rangers Review: “I must say I didn’t know much about the manager.
“Graeme Souness’ comment didn’t necessarily help by saying he would have gone for [Frank] Lampard.
“If you think that, keep it in-house, you don’t have to go and announce it to everybody.
“My view overall is one of being more positive about it.”
Philippe Clement has been an inspired choice as Rangers head coach
Fans who had their hearts set on Lampard and were uncertain about Clement’s appointment have surely been won over in the months since the Belgian has been at the helm.
The Gers have been superb under Clement. Not only did they beat Aberdeen 1-0 to lift the Scottish League Cup in December, they are also into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup – where they will face Hearts – and sit just one point off top spot in the league standings with a game in hand on leaders Celtic. A treble-winning campaign is more than fanciful talk at this stage of the season.

Rangers have been outstanding defensively, shipping a league-low 17 goals in 30 matches whilst scoring 67 times themselves – the second-most in the division.
Their early Europa League exit at the Round of 16 stage is the only blip in this outstanding season – but Benfica, who dropped into the competition from the Champions League – are no pushovers and were made to work for their victory.
The future certainly looks bright at Ibrox under the guidance of their Belgian boss.
