Rangers: Danny Murphy and Martin O’Neill share ‘monumental’ verdict ahead of Celtic clash

Rangers’ Old Firm derby against Celtic will be “absolutely monumental” in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, according to Danny Murphy and Martin O’Neill.

Philippe Clement’s side currently sit a point behind the Hoops with a game in hand ahead of Sunday’s (7 April) showdown, meaning wins against Celtic and Dundee could see them five points clear at the top of the Premiership.

While there are still plenty of games to go and many potential twists and turns still to come in the coming weeks, Murphy believes the Light Blues can take a huge step towards the title with a win at Ibrox on Sunday.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday (3 April, 12:25) he said: “If Rangers win, then they could actually afford to lose the next one against Celtic and win all their other games so it’s absolutely monumental for Rangers in terms of giving them the control.”

O’Neil agreed saying: “It’s really big. Obviously a point separating them at the moment and Rangers have a game in hand. This is at Ibrox and yeah a pivotal game.”

Will Rangers or Celtic win the Scottish Premiership title this season?

While nothing will be won on Sunday at Ibrx, plenty can still be lost and Rangers will feel that they simply have to claim all three points if they want to get their hand on the Premiership title this season ahead of their Glasgow rivals.

Clement has lost his only Glasgow derby away at Parkhead and on a personal note, the Gers boss will likely be keen to get one over Brendan Rodgers to show that he isn’t just in Scotland to make up the numbers.

A five-point margin at the top of the table would represent an impressive lead for the Light Blues and while it won’t be insurmountable, it will give Clement’s team a bit of breathing room with another derby just around the corner.

Hopefully, they can get over the line and take a huge step towards some more silverware to continue their impressive start under the Belgian. It won’t be easy, but they have some big players fit and ready to make an impact.
