Gordon Duncan shares Rangers and Celtic ‘fear’ amid ‘extreme’ Old Firm situation

Gordon Duncan has admitted he previously had a “fear” that the Rangers and Celtic games were going to descend into the home teams always winning.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Tuesday (2 April), the host said the Hoops bucked that trend when they claimed a 1-0 victory at Ibrox earlier this season.

When discussing home advantage ahead of the Old Firm clash on Sunday (7 April), he added that there is currently the “most extreme advantage” at this moment in time due to the fact there are no away fans in the stadiums.

“It’s still quite a small sample of no fans or the small allocation, which we’re pleased to see is going to improve a bit next season,” said Duncan.

“I had this fear a few games ago that we were going to descend into home team always wins. But of course, Celtic went to Ibrox earlier this season, Kyogo scored and they won 1-0 and they bucked that.

“I do wonder if the obvious factor about home advantage is your fans and, right now, we’ve got the most extreme advantage of that because there are no other fans.”

How big is home advantage for Rangers and Celtic?

It is certainly a huge advantage for the home sides to only have their supporters in the stadium when they are on top in games.

But on the other hand, the silence can be almost deafening when the away side is either on top or they grab a goal.

Nobody wants the games to become basically a formality and for the hosts to be winning every single time as that takes something away from the Old Firm fixture.

The Gers will be hoping that is the case this weekend, though, to put them firmly in control of the title race as they currently sit just one point behind Celtic with a game in hand.

Even though there will once again be no away fans inside Ibrox, it’s surely still going to be a massive occasion given how much is on the line for both sides.
