Rangers: Kemar Roofe will need something ‘extraordinary’ to play v Celtic at Ibrox
John McCarry believes Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has next to no chance of playing in Rangers’ Old Firm derby against Celtic on April 7, writing in the Scottish Daily Mail.
Scottish Daily Mail journalist John McGarry has cast doubt over Kemar Roofe’s ability to make an impact at the business end of the season, saying it’ll take something ‘extraordinary’ for the Jamaican international to even feature in this weekend’s Old Firm derby.
McGarry said this morning that Roofe’s absence from the Gers’ squad against Hibernian on March 30 “didn’t say much for where he stands in the pecking order as the defining weeks of the season approach.”
Referencing the much stronger form of Cyriel Dessers and Fabio Silva in Philippe Clement’s attack, McGarry added “Dessers has 17 goals this term. That’s 15 more than Roofe has managed. You feel he’ll have to do something extraordinary in training this week just to become part of his manager’s thinking.”
Rangers boss Clement can’t rely on Roofe reliability in front of goal
Roofe has undoubtedly scored vital goals during his time at Ibrox, but the striker has scored just twice so far in an injury-hit 2023-24. His solitary strike in the league came in August, also netting the winner against Betis in Rangers’ final Europa League group stage match in December.

That’s not the greatest of contributions for a team trying to chase down Celtic at the top of the Premiership, and McGarry recognises that “it’s hard to see how investing into a 31-year-old injury-prone forward fits into Rangers’ player trading model.”
With Dessers and Abdallah Sima both in double figures this season, and Fabio Silva scoring four goals himself since arriving in January, it’s becoming an increasingly difficult task for Roofe to make any kind of impact as Rangers’ title charge reaches its apex.
