Rangers: Scott Wright issues Celtic challenge at Ibrox despite controversy v Hibernian

Scott Wright has assured fans that Rangers are confident going into the Old Firm clash with Celtic on 7 April after securing all three points at Ibrox against Hibernian.

The winger insisted that these games can be one-off occasions, coming down to a case of who wants it more, and backed Philippe Clement’s men to use the positive momentum they have built.

This comes despite what Wright described as “torture” when his goal to put Rangers 1-0 up against Hibs was disallowed after a controversial VAR check, although his team went on to secure a 3-1 victory.

Speaking to the Daily Record [1 April], Wright shared: “We did a job on Saturday, got the three points, and we will dust ourselves down, recover and get ready for the game next week.

“We’re confident. We’re in a right good spot as a team in terms of momentum and the way we’re playing.

“Sometimes these games are just flash in the pan and it’s a case of who wants it more. We will recover, get ready for the game and take it as it comes.

“These games are always so important for us as a team and we know how much it means for the fans as well. So, yeah, we’ll go into the game with confidence.”

Wright then moved on to the controversial disallowed goal against Hibernian as he confessed: “I don’t want to torture myself by looking at it. I asked the ref at the time if it was close and he said it was close.

“It’s just one of those things. It was frustrating for me because I want to add stuff to my game, but that is not going to define our performance. I can help the team in more ways than one.”

Rangers v Celtic clash could decide the title at Ibrox

The ongoing title race is one of the closest we have seen in recent years, with the two leading sides currently separated by just one point, although Rangers have a game in hand which theoretically could pull them two points clear.

However, that game in hand – coming after the clash with Dundee at Dens Park was suspended – will be pushed to the back of their minds, as Clement’s team know victory at Ibrox in the Old Firm will put the title race back into their hands.

If they can beat Celtic and then secure all three points against Dundee midweek, Rangers will move five points clear at the top of the league, putting themselves in the strongest possible position to go all the way and take the trophy home.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has overseen an excellent turnaround at Rangers.

However, a defeat would see Celtic pull four points clear for now, piling extra pressure on the Dundee clash and taking the race out of their hands, albeit with one Old Firm yet to take place after the league splits.

While the race won’t be over after this clash, it will certainly hand control to one of the two clubs, and Wright’s claim of confidence will need to be backed up on the day.
