Rangers: Jeff Stelling shares James Tavernier transfer verdict live on talkSPORT

Jeff Stelling has insisted James Tavernier will not be making a transfer move from Rangers to an English club this summer, pointing to his age as a deciding factor.

The legendary broadcaster pointed out that a move south of the border is unlikely to take place this summer with Tavernier now 32 years old, despite his impressive performances.

Andy Townsend, meanwhile, gushed over the right-back’s “astonishing” goalscoring record at Ibrox, pointing to how much of a bonus his goals provide to Rangers.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [08:53], Stelling predicted: “He’s 32 now, he’s not going to be coming south of the border, that is for sure.”

Townsend then followed up by sharing: “Some record, that’s astonishing. It’s a brilliant record. How much of a bonus that is to his team, when you’ve got someone like that in those defensive areas, and I know he can play further forward.

“That is a very, very good record. An amazing goalscoring record.”

James Tavernier crucial for Rangers once again v Hibs

The praise for Tavernier comes after he scored again in the 3-1 win against Hibs, inspiring the conversation about his outstanding goalscoring record.

The captain was terrific again as he helped his side to another win at Ibrox despite having rather uncharacteristically missed a penalty in the first half, before minutes later firing his team ahead after a late run into the box.

Tavernier will be aware of how big next week’s clash against Celtic is, with the result potentially deciding the destination of this season’s SPFL title, and their recent poor record will need to be flipped upside down if they want to take all three points.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has overseen an excellent turnaround at Rangers.

Concern had emerged that he might have suffered an injury towards the end of the game, but he quickly put any worry at ease on that front.

The news that Tavernier will not be injured for the game is a huge boost, alongside the return of Abdallah Sima who has recovered from his previous injury blow just in time for the biggest game of the season so far in Glasgow.
