Dermot Gallagher reacts to what happened in Rangers win v Hibs live on Sky Sports

Dermot Gallagher believes the officials were right to disallow Scott Wright’s goal in the Rangers game against Hibernian on Saturday (30 March).

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on Monday (1 April, 11:54am), the former English Premier League referee said the Gers winger slightly encroached into the box when he scored the rebound following James Tavernier’s missed penalty in the first half.

He added that this is where there is a “zero tolerance” with VAR after they decided the 26-year-old had stepped inside the area in the Light Blues’ 3-1 victory at Ibrox.

“If he would have had size six boots instead of size eight, he wouldn’t have encroached,” said Gallagher. “But he does just encroach and, because it’s him that scores, it’s all about who impacts and scores.

“If you look, it’s actually Wright that’s in the box and he scores, so it’s disallowed. This is where the zero tolerance is because, once you’ve got VAR and you can see his toes over the line, that’s it.”

Rangers on wrong end of tight decision against Hibernian

It was an extremely tight decision for VAR to eventually decide that Wright was in the box before he found the back of the net for Rangers.

While he perhaps didn’t really gain much of an advantage due to the fact his foot only just crossed the line, he did still step into the box and a free-kick was rightly awarded.

It was almost great anticipation from the Scotsman as he raced onto the ball and supplied an excellent finish across the goal.

But the Gers responded well to that setback and took the lead just a few minutes later when Tavernier did eventually open the scoring.

It was an important win for Philippe Clement’s side in the end as their focus now shifts towards the Old Firm clash against Celtic on 7 April.
