Tom English hits back at Rangers whataboutery by Celtic fans amid incident v Livingston

Tom English hit back at Rangers whataboutery on social media regarding a Celtic fans’ chant during the win over Livingston.

Celtic supporters celebrated Jamie Brandon’s own goal to give them the lead against the division’s bottom side by chanting about the IRA.

BBC Scotland’s chief football writer English questioned that logic in a post on his X account [31 March], to which many asked why he does not raise the same questions regarding Rangers fans’ chants.

“Celtic break the deadlock against bottom place Livingston. Celtic fans respond by singing about the IRA,” he said.

“Cue ‘WHAT ABOUT THEM!!!’ I know that this is a very small percentage of the overall Celtic support, but that percentage multiplies away from home.

“Score a goal and celebrate by singing about a war in a place where nearly everybody wants peace, including so many former IRA people.”

Celtic go top ahead of Old Firm clash

English’s message was always going to be met with this response, with many quick to pile on and ask about Rangers fans. It is a delicate subject and one that is probably best not raised on social media.

Celtic ultimately got the job done in their win over Livingston, with Paulo Bernardo and Matt O’Riley also adding their names to the scoresheet at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

With that win, Celtic now head into next week’s Old Firm clash one point clear at the top of the division, albeit having played a game more due to the Gers’ clash with Dundee being called off two weeks ago.

That will be an Old Firm for the ages given the tight nature of the division. All eyes will be on the home fans and every chant will be closely analysed. Fingers crossed what happens on the field is the biggest talking point after the game.
