Philippe Clement makes error as Cyriel Dessers decision made in Rangers XI v Hibernian
Philippe Clement has made an error in his Rangers team selection after naming Cyriel Dessers in his starting lineup for the clash with Hibernian.
The Gers are looking to move back to the top of the table for 24 hours with a win at Ibrox, but are dealing with a host of injury issues currently following the international break.
That has seen Clement name a side with two changes from the last outing they had, the 1-0 defeat to Benfica which saw them crash out of the Europa League.
Jack Butland remains in goal while James Tavernier and Connor Goldson are joined in defence by John Souttar and Borna Barisic. John Lundstram and Mohammed Diomande continue in midfield, while the attacking roles are filled by Todd Cantwell, Scott Wright, Fabio Silva and Dessers leading the line.
But while the Nigeria international has been in decent form since the Belgian coach came into the role at Ibrox, he’s quite clearly not the man to take this team forward.
Fabio Silva deserves a chance to lead the line for Rangers
Fabio Silva has been a fantastic addition to the squad, with his movement and link-up play excellent since his January arrival and he has shown a good poacher’s instinct with four goals.
His most recent performances have come off the left-wing, but he has shown great quality in and around the penalty area and deserves a chance to stake a claim for his preferred position as the number nine.
With a huge Old Firm derby against Celtic to come next weekend too, there is no better chance than to give him that chance. We already know Dessers’ ceiling and while he may score, he tends to miss far more opportunities than necessary.
Clement should know by now the limits of his squad, but by starting Dessers once again he has proven that he is still figuring it out.
