SPFL make new Rangers and Celtic announcement ahead of Old Firm

Rangers’ Old Firm meetings with Celtic next season will see the return of away supporters to stadiums at both Ibrox and Parkhead, the SPFL have confirmed.

In a statement on its website on Friday (29 March) the Scottish football governing body confirmed that both Glasgow sides will be afforded a five per cent allocation for away games for both Old Firm matches in the 2024/25 campaign.

However, the remaining two clashes in the 2023/24 season will still be played exclusively in front of home supporters. These new rules will be implemented as long as both clubs meet the SPFL’s requirements at both stadiums.

Will there be Celtic fans at the Old Firm clash with Rangers at Ibrox?

Pundits and supporters alike have been vocal in their unhappiness in recent seasons with the lack of away supporters at both Parkhead and Ibrox and it is excellent to see a compromise reached to get away fans back in grounds.

While five per cent remains an incredibly small allocation, it is a step in the right direction and hopefully, that amount will grow in the future as long as there is no more trouble between supporters when Old Firm sides meet.

The Glasgow derby is one of football’s most exciting games, but it has lost an edge in recent years without travelling fans as the back and forth between supporters is what makes derby days special up and down the United Kingdom.

Hopefully, Rangers will be able to get the job done in the final two Old Firm clashes of the season and then entertain their fans at Parkhead next year when they’re allowed to make the trip across Glasgow.
