Rangers: Todd Cantwell may have dismissed Philippe Clement rift suggestion with new comments
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been widely praised for his work since arriving at Ibrox in place of Michael Beale early in the season.
The Belgian has quickly transformed the Gers both domestically and in the Europa League after an incredibly slow start to the campaign, but there have been a couple of things that the Belgian has been criticised for.
Some supporters have slammed Clement for his poor early record against Celtic, while others have claimed that he hasn’t got the best out of Todd Cantwell by playing the Englishman out of position as a wide midfielder.
However, the former Norwich City man has brushed aside any suggestion that he is unhappy to be playing in a different role under the Belgian with his latest comments ahead of the Gers’ clash with Hibernian.
As quoted by the Gers on X (29 March) he said: “We need to win every game that we play now, it is as simple as that. We have to concentrate on the task ahead of us tomorrow, we are playing a good team with good players.
“We have had some difficult injuries and it shows what the manager has had to deal with. You need to be able to play in different positions, I think that is important now in football.”
Will Philippe Clement and Rangers sell Todd Cantwell in the summer transfer window?
It is clear from Cantwell’s latest comments that the Englishman is more than willing to be adaptable to fit in Clement’s side. As he suggested, playing in several different positions has become a crucial part of the modern game.
While supporters and pundits will continue to suggest the Gers would be better if the 26-year-old played centrally week in and week out, any idea that he is unhappy with his role under Clement’s management can be dismissed.
Cantwell can turn a game on its head with a single action, something that very few players in the Premiership can do at the drop of the hat. In a title race that could go right down to the wire, those sorts of game-changers become crucial.
Hopefully, he can stay fit and available for the remainder of the season and help the Gers lift their first Premiership title under their new manager.
