Rangers: Todd Cantwell confirms Ibrox injury update ahead of SPFL clash with Hibs
Todd Cantwell admits it was “unfortunate” to pick up an injury recently but says is now in a “good place” to feature for Rangers.
The Englishman confirmed in the prematch press conference on Friday 29 March that he is ready for Hibs the following day, while pointing out the injury crisis that Philippe Clement has been dealing with shows versatility is vital.
Cantwell came on as a late substitute in the 1-0 defeat by Benfica on 14 March, but had to miss the Scottish Cup victory over this weekend’s opponents at Easter Road, and the first leg of the Europa League tie, as well as the three previous SPFL games with a hamstring problem.
According to the club’s official Twitter account Cantwell said: “Feeling good, an unfortunate injury I had but feeling in a good place now. There is excitement from the fans and also inside, we know exactly what is up for grabs in the next few weeks…
“We have had some difficult injuries and it shows what the manager has had to deal with. You need to be able to play in different positions, I think that is important now in football.”
Todd Cantwell back for run in under Philippe Clement at Rangers
Injuries seem to be par for the course at the best of times at Rangers in recent years but this season has been especially bad.
The likes of key attackers such as Danilo, Abdallah Sima and Oscar Cortes have all been ruled out long term, with Cantwell, Dujon Sterling, Ross McCausland and Tom Lawrence among others with smaller lay-offs.
Ridvan Yilmaz then picked up a problem over the international break to add to the manager’s headache, although it thankfully appears not to have been serious.
But Clement needs all hands on deck for the SPFL title run in and the Scottish Cup semi-final and potential final.
Getting players back would hugely boost the chances of capturing a domestic treble that would have been completely fanciful at the start of the season under Michael Beale.
Having Cantwell back firing should help in that regard, with every game now essentially a must-win assignment.
