Rangers v Celtic: Philippe Clement and Brendan Rodgers endure wasted trip ahead of Old Firm

Rangers manager Philippe Clement and Celtic counterpart Brendan Rodgers were pictured sitting near each other during the Scotland versus Northern Ireland friendly this week.

As reported by The Scottish Sun [28 March], the pair were sat in the “posh seats” as Northern Ireland picked up a somewhat surprising 1-0 win at Hampden Park on Tuesday (26 March).

The pair were in attendance a week-and-a-half out from the crunch Old Firm showdown at Ibrox that could well determine where the Scottish Premiership title ends up.

However, it was a wasted journey for both – unless they are fans of watching low-key international friendlies – as no players from Rangers nor Celtic got on the field.

Callum McGregor was out injured, while Celtic team-mates Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor did not feature. John Souttar did not play from the Rangers contingent and Ross McCausland was ruled out.

Rodgers, though, did at least have more of a reason to be in attendance as he is Northern Irish.

Clement was not alone in attending the game, as fellow Rangers backroom staff members Alex Rae, Stephan van der Heyden and Brian Gilmour were also there.

If nothing else, it perhaps gave the quartet a chance to run the rule over future targets. On the face of it, though, it was a wasted night off on an evening Scotland fans would rather forget.

And the stakes will be much higher, it is fair to say, when Rangers welcome fierce rivals Celtic to Ibrox in early April.
