Rangers: Scott Wright likely to leave as Philippe Clement to change squad ‘quite considerably’

Scott Wright isn’t likely to have a future at Rangers despite a stand-out performance against Benfica at Ibrox, says Derek Ferguson.

The winger was impressive in the tight 1-0 defeat on 14 March in a rare start due to injuries elsewhere in the squad, having come close to leaving the club last summer.

Ferguson feels that exit could now belatedly come at the end of the season as Philippe Clement looks to refresh his options “quite considerably”, and on the strength of his entire Rangers career Wright probably hasn’t done enough to be part of the Belgian’s squad moving forward.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “It was a strong performance [against Benfica]. I think Scott, for me, has been better coming off the bench but with the injury crisis, if you want to call it that, at Rangers at the moment the manager had no other option but to play him.

“He’s always one of these players where you think that he’s capable of producing the goods at that level, and at times in that game he did do that.

“But the overall package, I don’t think he’s done himself any favours over the course of the last four or five seasons.

“In terms of whether he’s going to have a long-term commitment to Rangers, I don’t think so. I think Philippe Clement will be looking to freshen it up quite considerably during this summer break.

“So as well as Scott’s done, and you’ve got to remember he’s won a few medals being at Rangers, been very successful, not played a hell of a lot, but at times he has been important coming off the bench.

“But I don’t think he’s got a big future at Rangers.”

Benfica stand-out not enough to save Scott Wright at Rangers

Wright was seemingly on the brink of a move to Turkey for £500,000 during the last squad overhaul under Michael Beale, but the move never happened.

He has made 26 more appearances in all competitions this season and actually started two of Clement’s first two SPFL games in charge, but was again linked to an exit in January.

And he has rarely been a first choice option at Ibrox even as the likes of Abdallah Sima and Oscar Cortes have been ruled out by significant injuries so although he has a year left on his contract in the summer it would be no surprise to see him move on.

The excellent showing he put in against Benfica was a somewhat frustrating reminder that he has a lot of talent, but he hasn’t always shown it on a regular basis at Rangers so a departure seems likely if the manager wants to make signings.
