Giovanni van Bronckhorst reveals which derby fixture is bigger than Rangers v Celtic

Giovanni van Bronckhorst believes the Old Firm between Rangers and Celtic is the “most intense” fixture he’s been involved in on and off the pitch.

Speaking to FourFourTwo on Monday (25 March), the former Gers boss, however, said that El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid was the “biggest derby” he ever played in.

The Dutchman, who spent four years at Ibrox as a player and later a manager, added that the “whole world was watching” the game between the two Spanish rivals.

“The Old Firm was the most intense, on and off the pitch, but the Clasico was the biggest derby I ever played in,” said Van Bronckhorst.

“The whole world was watching. In my time at Barcelona, Real Madrid had all of the Galacticos, but we usually won those games.”

Is there a bigger game than Rangers and Celtic?

It’s pretty debatable as to which is the biggest derby fixture and many would certainly argue that the Old Firm is out in front.

While El Clasico is clearly a huge game between two sides that have been competing for the biggest honours for several years, Rangers and Celtic’s rivalry runs a lot deeper.

But alongside those two matches, Van Bronckhorst has been involved in some other notable fixtures, such as Arsenal against Tottenham and the clash between Ajax and Feyenoord.

After his time as the Gers boss following his playing days at Ibrox, the Dutchman will know what the Old Firm is all about and how important it is to win those games.

With the next instalment of the fixture just weeks away and the title on the line, Philippe Clement will be looking to taste his first derby day success in Glasgow on 7 April.
