Rangers: Nigerian media react to what Cyriel Dessers did v Ghana
Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers featured for Nigeria in their victory over Ghana on Friday (22 March).
The 29-year-old was handed the opportunity to lead the line for the Super Eagles as he scored a first-half penalty to put his side ahead.
Ademola Lookman doubled the lead for his country before Jordan Ayew grabbed a late consolation from the spot for the Black Stars to ensure the friendly ended 2-1 in Marrakech.
Nigerian news site soccernet.ng praised Dessers for his performance and “well-taken spot-kick”, handing him a 7.2 rating as it claimed his partnership with Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho looked “promising”.
Allnigeriasoccer.com said the forward kept his composure from the spot and that he was a “menace” leading the line for the Super Eagles, earning him a 7 for “contributing significantly” to his country’s attacking threat in their victory.
The plaudits continued to roll in for Dessers, with Afrik-Foot giving him an 8.5 rating – the highest of any of the outfield players – after claiming his link-up play was “superb” in what was his best game in a Nigerian shirt.
Cyriel Dessers Nigeria display bodes well for Rangers
It certainly bodes well for Rangers that Dessers put in a fine performance for Nigeria as he’s a completely different player when he’s full of confidence.
He will no doubt be looking to make up for lost time at international level, having been left out of the squad that reached the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year.
The fact he went straight into the starting lineup shows that caretaker manager Finidi George has clearly been impressed by his recent performances for the Gers.

It was just the forward’s second goal for the Super Eagles and he’ll be hoping he’s done enough to earn a place in the lineup for the game against Mali on 26 March.
Philippe Clement will be hoping the striker will come back from the international break in good spirits as he looks to help the Light Blues challenge for trophies this season.
In other Rangers news, Neil Lennon has labelled a situation as “unacceptable” after what happened to the Gers.
