Rangers: ‘Inglorious’ John Souttar picked out of Scotland defeat v Netherlands

Stephen McGowan has criticised Rangers defender John Souttar for his performance off the bench in the Scotland defeat against the Netherlands on Friday (22 March).

Writing on page 107 of the Scottish Daily Mail on Saturday (23 March), the journalist said the 27-year-old’s introduction to the game after replacing Kieran Tierney on 68 minutes was an “inglorious affair”.

He added that the Dutch took advantage of a lapse in concentration from the Gers centre-back within minutes of him coming onto the field as Georginio Wijnaldum headed home Cody Gakpo’s cross as Souttar scrambled to get to grips with his man too late in the 4-0 defeat in Amsterdam.

Rangers ace John Souttar fails to impress for Scotland

It certainly wasn’t the best night for Scotland as three goals within the final 20 minutes ensured they were on the end of a pretty hefty defeat in their friendly against the Netherlands.

Souttar would have been hoping to make a positive impact off the bench, but it turned out to be a disappointing outing for the defender.

His error just a few minutes after coming on will do his chances of starting the next game against Nothern Ireland no favours with Scotland boss Steve Clarke.

The fact his side conceded a further two goals while he was on the pitch isn’t a great look, even though it was a weakened team that ended the game in Amsterdam.

The centre-back will just be hoping to show some of the form he’s displayed for the Gers this season after playing an important role in their bid to lift the Scottish Premiership title.
