Rangers: Ianis Hagi transfer admission will leave fans fuming

By Sadat Shah

Sometimes silence is golden and that is certainly the case when it comes to Rangers loanee Ianis Hagi.

The Romanian is on a season-long at Deportivo Alaves having fallen out of favour at Ibrox after recovering from a serious knee injury.

Hagi has not exactly been a glittering success in La Liga, notching up just two goals in 22 appearances in all competitions in his time in the Spanish top flight.

Additionally, he has only assisted once in 18 games, which has led to a goal so it’s unprofessionalism on his part to even assume that Alaves would want to keep him.

What did Rangers loanee Ianis Hagi say about his future?

So, it was a little bit of a surprise to see he was so open about his desire to remain in Spain during an interview with Marca (21 March).

“I love the level of La Liga, I love everything in Spain: the teams, the competition between players and teams, the pressure that exists here,” he said (quotes translated into English).

“I feel that it is the League in which I can be most successful and in which I can bring out all my qualities and it is the league that I have followed since I was a child and it was always my dream to be here. I’m here now and I want to be here for a long time.”

They are comments that are unlikely to sit well with Rangers supporters, given he is still contracted to the club. It would have been better to allow common sense to prevail and allow the club to determine whether he still has an Ibrox future.

Indeed, it was the Rangers, after all, who allowed him the platform to display his talents so it feels a little unprofessional to come out before his loan deal comes to an end and speculate about his long-term future.

He needs to sit down with Rangers in the summer to discuss his future as he still might have a part to play there if Clement feels he could be a part of his squad.

Now it feels like it is a long road back. In this instance, Hagi probably should have kept his counsel.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement will be furious after a development during the international break.
