Rangers: Scrapped VAR could fund Dens Park investment after SPFL embarrassed at Dundee
VAR should be scrapped to pay for better facilities after Rangers and Dundee’s League clash was called off, says Derek Ferguson.
The pundit called the controversial failure of the game to go ahead on Sunday (17 March) a “crying shame” that made the whole of Scottish football look bad when the match was supposed to be shown live on Sky Sports.
Ferguson was present at the ground before the game and spoke to supporters who had travelled long distances to be there, but when the money hasn’t been put into the surface at Dens Park the lack of drainage meant only one thing.
With video technology for officiating proving so divisive he said that was one obviou avenue to free up cash to go towards pitches.
He exclusively told Ibrox News: We speak about VAR, where that money could be better spent. It’s clear to see it should be spent on Dundee’s park.”
“The groundsman have got a hell of a job to try to get that game on but it just goes against you. If you’ve not got the right drainage, there’s been no money spent on the surface for a number of years, so there’s only going to be one outcome.
“It’s a shame because people look at Scottish football, it’s supposed to be on Sky, and they’re probably scratching their heads wondering why it’s off, so from that respect it doesn’t look good for Scottish football.
“I can see money’s tight up here, you’ve not got the finances, but you look to where you could get those finances and VAR’s one of them. It’s a crying shame.
“I was up there at the ground, spoke to a number of supporters that had travelled a far longer distance than me, so the time, the effort and the money that fans spend only for it to be called off a couple of hours before the game, real disappointment, and it just doesn’t look good for the Scottish game.”

Rangers v Dundee rescheduled after Dens Park controversy
Philippe Clement wasn’t happy that the game at Dens Park didn’t go ahead, having travelled to the ground with his squad in the hopes of rebounding quickly after disappointment against Benfica, but the inconvenience to the club pales in significance to fans.
The game has been rescheduled midweek after the Old Firm clash with Celtic and it has been tipped to be an advantage in the title race, where Rangers are still tipped to be favourites despite going into the international break a point behind Celtic thanks to not being able to play.
VAR doesn’t look like it is going anywhere in the near future so Dundee will need to find another way to ensure games don’t continue to be postponed.
