Rangers star John Souttar handed Scotland boost as double injury development emerges

Rangers manager Philippe Clement will be eager to get his players back on the pitch as soon as possible.

The Ibrox club lost their most recent outing 1-0 to Benfica, with their league match against Dundee just a few days later having been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The last-minute postponement annoyed the man in the dugout, who will grow even more frustrated given how an international break means his side don’t return to action until the end of the month.

The Gers will, however, at least have some players lining out for their respective nations in the coming days, one of which could be John Souttar.

The centre-back has been called up to the latest Scotland squad by Steve Clarke for their friendly clashes with the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

The matches serve as preparation for Euro 2024, meaning Souttar will be doing all he can to impress his national team boss.

And he has now been handed a huge boost in that endeavour, with fellow centre-back Grant Hanley forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury [BBC Sport, 19 March].

Moreover, another centre-back in Scott McKenna was being assessed by national team medics on Monday (18 March) after picking up a knock for Copenhagen [Sky Sports, 19 March].

While Souttar will by no means be celebrating their injuries, his chances of getting minutes for Scotland this month have been increased, and therefore so have his chances of not only making the Euro 2024 squad, but playing in the major tournament.

Souttar does, however, still have the likes of Jack Hendry, Liam Cooper and Ryan Porteous to compete with in central defence.
